Program Participants
The Assisted Housing Department provides housing opportunities for families in the Metropolitan Detroit Service Area. The Assisted Housing Department consists of the Housing Choice Voucher and Moderate Rehabilitation Housing Programs.
The Assisted Housing Department does not own or manage property. Rather, it contracts with private landlords to provide housing to participating families. DHC makes a rental payment to the landlord on behalf of the participating family which is responsible for payment of the balance, if any, of the rental amount due the landlord. The vouchers provided to participating families are portable from landlord to landlord.
Participating families can select rental housing located in DHC's service area which includes the City of Detroit, Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer, and St. Clair counties. DHC will share rental housing lists provided by landlords with participating families. However, finding housing that is decent, safe, and sanitary in accordance with housing quality standards is the responsibility of the participating family. Housing that does not meet housing quality standards will not be accepted in the Housing Choice Voucher Program.
Rent Reasonableness & Payment Standards Effective October 1, 2020
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D) requires every Housing Authority to complete a Rent Reasonableness Survey to demonstrate the rent requested for a unit is reasonable when compared to other current rates of unassisted rent in the same area. Payment standards (which are set by the DHC) are based on the voucher size (number of bedrooms) of the resident.
